Complete Forecast

000 FXUS65 KMSO 270923 AFDMSO Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Missoula MT 323 AM MDT Wed Mar 27 2019 .DISCUSSION...Moisture moving northward out of Nevada/Idaho will continue to bring the first bouts of light precipitation to the Northern Rockies through this morning. Light snow showers have already been observed in and around Butte, while rain showers continue in Salmon, Idaho and adjacent locations. This will be the general focus of where the greatest impacts from snowfall will occur later this evening and through midday Thursday. Enough cold air and lowering snow levels will allow for a period of snow to stick to road surfaces (above 4000 feet or so) in the aforementioned locations, particularly Thursday morning, when 4 to 6 inches of snow could accumulate. Lost Trail, Homestake, and MacDonald Passes are still the favored high elevation roadways to see the most snowfall. For valleys, the situation becomes much more difficult to forecast. With fluctuating snow levels and a higher daytime sun angle, snow that actually falls to valley floors will have a hard time sticking for very long. That being said, there are valleys of west central Montana (Missoula, Bitterroot, Highway 12 corridor, etc) that could see a period of snow early Thursday morning that may have a negative impact on Thursday morning`s commute. Elsewhere in our forecast area, rain is expected for north central Idaho valleys, such as Grangeville, Orofino, etc...While a mix of snow and rain should be anticipated for points north of Interstate 90 in Montana through Thursday. Some light snowfall may occur in the Mission and southern Flathead valleys, but impacts are expected to remain minimal at this time. Showers may linger on Friday with northwesterly flow over the region. Drier and warmer conditions (yet below average temperatures) are planned for the first half of the weekend while under high pressure. An active northwesterly flow develops on Sunday, bringing a return to showers and temperatures around 10 degrees below average. A showery, below-average temperature trend is expected for the first half of next week. && .AVIATION...Moisture and shortwave disturbances are producing showers and lowered ...
